My grandparents lived in a condo by the sea for 30 years. My grandma died suddenly during COVID. After she passed, we took our last trip there. Three generations in one apartment—my grandfather, my parents, and me. These are the photos from that trip. The apartment was sold soon after. I’m interested in how we photograph memory.

How do we get to know our parents as people? How do we see past the role we’ve put them in for our whole lives? My father has cancer and my mom is a doctor. In 2020, I moved back in with them for eight months to photograph them.

What emerged was a portrait of a man who for a decade has been fighting for his life with a quiet persistence and diligence. He is deaf in one ear and mostly deaf in the other. Yet he still collects jazz records, plays his drum kit daily, and makes playlists to share with our family and neighbors. He needed a cane to walk after his bone marrow transplant, but still takes meticulous care of his garden. He does squats in the morning and push-ups on his fingertips in the evening before bed.

The camera is the most powerful way to pay attention to the details of another. It’s also the most surprising way to discover more about ourselves and what we’re looking for.

Mes grands-parents ont vécu dans un appartement en bord de mer pendant trente ans. Ma grand-mère est décédée subitement durant la pandémie de COVID. Après sa disparition, nous y avons fait un dernier séjour. Trois générations réunies dans un même appartement : mon grand-père, mes parents et moi. Voici les photos de ce voyage. L’appartement a été vendu peu de temps après. La façon dont nous photographions la mémoire m’intéresse.

Comment apprendre à connaître nos parents en tant qu’individus ? Comment voir au-delà du rôle dans lequel nous les avons cantonnés toute notre vie ? Mon père a un cancer et ma mère est médecin. En 2020, je suis retournée vivre chez eux pendant huit mois pour les photographier.

Il en a résulté le portrait d’un homme qui, depuis dix ans, lutte pour sa survie avec une persévérance et une assiduité silencieuses. Il est sourd d’une oreille et quasi sourd de l’autre. Pourtant, il continue de collectionner des disques de jazz, de jouer de la batterie chaque jour et de créer des playlists qu’il partage avec notre famille ainsi qu’avec nos voisins. S’il a eu besoin d’une canne pour marcher après sa greffe de moelle osseuse, il continue d’entretenir méticuleusement son jardin. Il fait des squats le matin et des pompes sur le bout des doigts le soir, avant de se coucher.

L’appareil photo est le moyen le plus puissant de prêter attention aux détails d’une autre personne. C’est aussi une façon surprenante d’en apprendre davantage sur nous-mêmes et sur ce que nous recherchons.
